Family holiday in Zauchensee

Family holiday in Zauchensee

Anne Cathrine Lind Ceni - Monday d. 11. December 2017

When skiing with the family, there are two things that are especially important: you have to be able to get the pulse up when skiing, but you also have to get it all the way down again when the skis are back in the hotel’s ski storage room.

The easiest way to get your pulse up comes when the ski area is cool and fits everyone in the family and the low pulse comes when you do not have to think about transportation to and from the lift, but just can go straight into the hotel and relax in the room, in the lounge or in the wellness area.

On a family skiing holiday to Zauchensee both of these requirements are met and in addition, the small, cozy village has so much more to offer.

The highest in Ski Amadé

With its location at 1.300 meters above sea level, and at the end of its own little valley, the village and the ski area are blessed with great snow conditions. When the storms come in from north they get pushed into the valley and hang a little longer and more snow follows. The height makes sure that the snow stays and the season usually also stretches from late November to early May. The village is not that big and no matter where you are in the ski area, it is easy to get down to it and to the hotel. With the great snow guarantee the route down to the village of course happens in ski.

The ski area at the end of the valley is brilliant for families with children and other groups where there are some differences in the skiing level. The area is located in the valley top and thus in a large pot. This means that you can ski all the way around, but always end up in the same place. Roughly, you can say that there are three “lift tops”, from which you have some long trips back to the village. Common to all of them is that you can choose difficulty according to your own skiing skills. No matter where you are in the terrain, you can always find skiing that suits you the best. If you are afraid of running out of challenges and do not think the slopes are challenging enough, the place is a small off-piste secret that draws free riders with wide skis from near and far. Fortunately, not that many know about this secret.

Amazing for children

For the children, the area is also built optimally. Down in the village there is a large children’s area where the children quickly get familiar with skiing. In fact, they do not need a lot of exercise before you can take them with you up in the terrain. If you go up to Rosskopf there are some blue slopes that can be driven very easily and without a lot of practice. You can take a couple of trips with the two-seat lift, which serves the easiest part of the piste. The piste has some waves and is a safe hit among the children and certainly also among the ski instructors.

Even from the “big” top, Gamskogel, there is a long, blue piste that stretches through the beautiful terrain, all the way down to the village. So, during the ski season, even very young children who have not been skiing can get around the whole terrain.

It is also from Gamskogel that the Welt Cup abfahrt starts. It is being used for racing for the women’s World Cup. Here the world’s best girls have directed their skis towards the valley and among others, Lindsey Vonn have won here. The piste is normally only red and has a slightly different course than when it is used for the World Cup race. But it’s super bold and an exciting challenge for the family’s bigger children and parents.

If you are looking for more challenges, there is a small beginners fun park down in the village. There are no big jumps, so it’s a safe place to let the kids start driving a bit freestyle.

There is also a marked and avalanche safe freeride area. It is quite steep and only for very skilled skiers.

If you want to experience even more, Zauchensee is part of Ski Amadé and with your ski pass you have access to 760 km of slopes. They can be reached on the other side of the mountain towards Flachauwinkl and there is basis for some long excursions. Just remember to reach the lift back before it closes for the day.

Relaxing hotel life

Another thing that makes Zauchensee family-friendly is the slightly isolated location. There are not that many hotels in the village and most of the day-tourists park in the more accessible ski areas. This means that there are not that many people on the slopes. The lifts actually have higher capacity than the hotels. The people from Flachau, Wagrain or St. Johann normally first shows up around lunch time. After lunch, when everyone has to get up again with the lift and back to their destinations, there can be a little bit crowded, but nothing against what you experience with the larger neighboring destinations.

There is also calm in Zauchensee and if you stay at Hotel Enzian, you will find that you can just relax and enjoy family life, the cozy Austrian atmosphere, the good food or a trip to the pool or wellness area. Of course, you can enjoy a beer in the bar, both for afterskiing and in the evening, but it is in a comfortable and calm atmosphere that helps to ensure the low heart rate.

When the darkness drops and the stars sparkle in the frost-clear air, high above the snowy peaks surrounding the valley, the calm completely falls over the village. After the day’s activities, it is not only the children who sleeps tight and dream about the fantastic skiing, the whole family does.

I worked at a travel agency in Denmark, who in 2010 decided to move the company to Switzerland. I decided to move with them and within no time I had fallen in love with the Alps, the nature and my husband. In 2015 I traveled to Australia with my husband and once we got back in January 2016 I started working for Ski Travel Group AG. I have always been very interested in marketing, but being able to combine both my passion for marketing and travel has been a gift. We all work as a team and one big family, which is so amazing.
